Atlanta’s Rock 100.5 Broadcasts “Furry Convention Undercover”

The Regular Guys from Rock 100.5 invaded Furry Weekend Atlanta. They used information they pulled from twitter.

They quote tweets from @Bad_Dragon, @Lupinesilver @Kravenlupei @Tigerafterdark and others. Include talking about the cerberus sheath from Fetish Zone.

Jaeger Fuchs states “For the record, Fetish Zone did not host any Cerberus parties at FWA as mentioned at the end of this broadcast.” FNN has confirmed this from multiple sources. Fetish Zone did not host such a party.

The radio hosts used Twitter to find and invade private room parties.

This doesn’t surprise me. The best stories, i.e. the most popular ones, all involve the most outrageous things they can find, so of course the person drinking out of a horse dildo will be in it. No one cares about the normal furries, they want the fucking crazy ones that make us all look bad because it will get them air time, which will make them famous. If you think about it, its not any more extreme than what you would expect to see out of a college frat house. Congratulations, you win the “well, duh!” award! Not all media are journalists seeking to tell the truth, or at least enough of the truth that they don’t get fired.

Most media is in the boredom-killing business, and makes money by gathering as large an audience as possible of a desired demographic to sell to advertisers. Anything that furthers that goal is fair game.

The radio personality indicated that he went to a party held by the “Cerebrus guys”. Based on his comments, I would have been prone to thinking it was BadDragon, since he mentions that table specifically in the broadcast. But since you were so specific in the comment you made, let’s get the clarification. Did you or did you not host a party at FWA where you had any wares out on tables where this individual might have seen them? Or would it have been BadDragon that had the “pyramid of lube” next to the items he was describing?

1. Fetish Zone or the “Cerberus Guys” did NOT host a party at FWA in any way or form.

2. Fetish Zone did NOT have a pyramid of lube in the dealers room in any way or form.

3. Fetish Zone did NOT post tweets regarding their table or parties in any way or form.

Our company is VERY conscious about its overall image and impact to outsiders at each and every furcon we set-up at.

If you had attended this convention you would have found our table to consist of only plush animals, t-shirts, collars and a small covered plastic case containing Cerberus for buyers over 18/+.

It’s not intended to be confrontational, as I stated before, I’ve bought things from you in the past. The main issue is just being direct and honest with people. The reason for the directness is that the DJ’s very clearly stated they did not go to the dealer room. So any comments regarding what was in the dealer room are totally irrelevant.

They only went to a room party. Since you state you didn’t have one, the original assumption is true, that BadDragon held one. And if it was BadDragon who was allowing non-attendees who turned out to be media into their room party, they are the ones who should be answering peoples’ inquiries and answering questions regarding damage to the convention’s image. You made yourself a target when you stated “for the record” that you didn’t do anything wrong when your company’s name wasn’t even in the mix. You may want to keep that in mind whenever things like this happen in the future.

The question that begs to be asked is why you are giving so much credit to a sensationalist talk show who based a 10 minute shock sketch off of what probably amounts to half assed “research” and a visit to the convention that (on air admittedly) violates FWA’s Attendance Policy? Certainly give them the benefit of the doubt over the well established dealer that paid legitimate money to the convention and followed the con’s dealer policies.

Furthermore, even if Fetish Zone wasn’t in the picture, this piece would have still occurred and would have been just as problematic. Don’t put your blinders on Jaeger just because his business was mentioned. The reality is press like this has occurred countless times in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Every time this happens furs scream bloody murder, and then a week later life goes on and everyone forgets about this “horrible atrocity”. Welcome to being a member of a strange, growing and intriguing subculture. People are going to put a magnifying glass on us from time to time, probably moreso going forward. Big deal. None of this will matter.

I actually didn’t give the radio jocks credit. If you look at the specifics in what I asked, I asked IF they had the party. Jaeger said he didn’t, and I’m not questioning his answer. The reason he got dragged into it was because his company wasn’t anywhere near being mentioned, and he threw out an official statement. That’s the surest way to draw attention to you. Remember the old phrase “Methinks thou doth protest too much”. If he wasn’t involved, there was no need put the name out there.

I just call things like I see em. As I stated elsewhere, I don’t think there was any kind of convention specific problem with Jaeger. I just become quite suspicious when a third party says “Here’s what I saw” and someone who isn’t mentioned at all replies “For the record, that wasn’t me.” Once Jaeger said he didn’t hold a party, the question was closed as far as I was concerned.

This. Look, here’s the honest truth. There were dealers in the dealer den selling adult material. There is a dealer called “Fetish Zone” who does sell Cerebrus toys. (Whether in the room itself or through their web site, they still offer it.) The convention obviously condones the activity since they allow this dealer to be there. Since the convention allows it, it’s a part of the fandom. Unless people stop purchasing the objects, and conventions stop allowing dealers who sell that kind of merchandise (especially with a name like “Fetish Zone”) to be an active part of the dealer space, you will have people throwing it in your face. If you don’t like it, take it to the dealers who sell the shit or get the conventions to stop them from being a part of it, and get them out of the dealer rooms. If you don’t care, then it’s there and you don’t anything to worry about.

Victor, have you even been to a funcon? Every convention is filled with dealers selling some type of adult materials; whether it be artwork, posters, books, cuffs, collars or adult toys. It’s part of our culture and to suggest to single out such dealers would result in a empty dealers room. These dealers clearly mark any of their adult material with 18/+ warnings as required by all conventions and minors are identified with a special color-coded badge so dealers can enforce this rule.

The majority of the items Fetish Zone sells at conventions is PG rated and includes such items as plush animals, t-shirts, giftware, cuffs and collars. It appears you are blaming Fetish Zone for the actions of other companies and individuals based solely on our name. We are honored that our products are widely known, but Fetish Zone in NO way tweeted or promoted Cerberus or room parties at FWA-2011.

And yes, I’ve been to furry cons and know what material is in the dealer room. I’ve even bought things from you in the past, so don’t get preachy. What I’m saying is that if conventions allow a dealer that specifically deals in fetish material, then they can’t publicly deny that there is sexuality being sold there. It’s that simple. There is a difference between selling books and art, and selling whips, collars, or cuffs. Look at the content of other types of a science fiction convention if you don’t believe that. You can find giftware, plush animals, t-shirts, books, and posters there too…but no sign of cuffs and collars. Those organizations don’t permit it.

If you have a sexually charged name, it’s going to create an image. And if conventions say “No more of this”, then they have a leg to stand on in terms of the whole “family friendly thing”. At this point based on the tweet BadDragon, and your comments here, FWA has no business posting on their website that they are a family-friendly event. That’s the point of the statement.

Now, stop side-stepping the question and answer it. Are you the the “Cerebrus guys” that the DJ’s found having a room party? If you held no room party, it’s fairly easy to honestly say you did not. If you did hold one, then just own up to it.

And no, I don’t think the fandom needs to “exorcise” anyone from events. You are putting words in people’s mouths. Just because you don’t approve of something, does not make you the spokesman for the fandom. I don’t live by your idea of morality, and I don’t expect you to live by mine. I personally don’t think that an event who has dealers of fetish gear should be labeled “family friendly”. But change the event nature? No way. There were well over 1600 people there and it’s growing every year. So the convention is doing something right. If it’s not for you, don’t go. But unless you are part of the convention staff, don’t go around telling a successful event that they need to “kick out” members in good standing if they have not violated a convention rule.

I keep seeing comments about “journalistic integrity.” Since when is a radio DJ a journalist? If they had the ability to graduate from journalism school, or any personal integrity themselves, they’d be working for a newspaper or showing up on your TV at 6 o’clock. Radio DJs only care about getting listeners, because more listeners means that station won’t be going off the air and putting them back on the streets where they belong.

Honestly? At this point? Who cares. Get a few thousand people in any one location and there’s bound to be a few interesting characters in the mix. Not just at a fur con, but anywhere. It looks bad from the outside, sure, but if people are going to search for the worst of the worst then they’ll find what they’re looking for.

Never mind the charity work that furries do, going out of their way to do good deeds, people getting together as friends, creating, drawing, inspiring. Nevermind the furs who get together to help tsunami victims or go out into communities to make good impressions. If we let our collective selves get wrapped up in the bad aspects of anything we’ll eventually get dragged down by it.

If you look hard enough you can find cracks in anything. Anything at all.

These guys were looking for a weird story. It’s up to us to make a difference the rest of the time to show what good we /can/ do as a community.

Either it’ll come to a point where people have heard it all before and they just won’t care, or this fandom will eventually go mainstream and become accepted for what it really is. Both seeming farther and farther away every day.
I still cringe every time I see or hear about people like this though.
Mostly because I recently told one of my really good friends I was a furry and he was so focused on his preconceptions and lies he’d heard that he wouldn’t let me explain what it furry is really about.
Even though these guys are worth the dirt they walk on, it still frustrates me to no end knowing that people like them cause my best friends think I’m a freak.

Lesson learned Holly. This is the reason why conventions tell attendees “Let us handle the media.” They are the ones who have the knowledge to be able to handle them, and they are the ones that need to deal with the fallout of bad interviews.

The largest fan based con in Atlanta is probably DragonCon. It’s been going on for many many years, is insanely large, and also has adult products on sale (BDSM Gear mostly). It normally gets really good press, though occasionally it also gets it’s share of “Look at the WEIRDOS” coverage.

It’s going to happen. Media can always choose to go in looking of the ‘shock’ stuff, and they’ll find it.

To a certain extent the fandom is yelling so loudly that we AREN’T sexually starve crazies, that we start to look like we protest to much. We’d probably do better to just admit that there is some sexual content / activity, but that it’s not the majority of furs interest. The more we yell, the more it looks like we have something sinister to hide.

At some point we (the fandom) will become old and boring enough that the media will stop caring. They’ll find something newer and more shocking and go running off to that.

That there are those in the fandom that are into that kind of stuff, but they are the minority. The majority of furs go to cons to chill and be furry :3.

But my point is that as they were looking for shock factor, why not cover anime or comic cons? Plenty of shock factor there too.
