Asylum Entertainment and MTV casting Furries for True Life Series

We were alerted by Sean Murphy about an email sent to Foxglove  about the casting call.

I’m casting an episode of True Life, focusing on being a Furry. This is a docu-series to chronicle the real life of a Furry. We have no intention of showing Furries in a negative light but instead hope to dispel some of the media myths out there about them. I would love to talk to you more about the show to see if you or anyone else you know might be interested.

  1. When it comes to quality unbiased factual programming one network that does NOT spring to mind is MTV.

If this is Asylum, then this time around they are not being forthcoming about it.
I received a mailing, exactly as above except sent by a “Brian”. No other details.

What makes me suspicious is that, as Chair for What The fur, I received a direct communication with someone at Asylum looking to film at our convention from June 1 to 3. I politely declined but in that mailing, the representative from Asylum Entertainment fully represented their company, gave plenty of information and was polite and professional in their communications. They said, however, that they were already in the process of following a furry, and that “she” was looking at coming to our convention (hence the request).

If they are putting out another call for casting, something doesn’t feel right.

I wish Hollywood would stop putting furries in the spotlight like that, good intentions or not, because the more popular something becomes, the more it’s hated by those who don’t like dorky/strange things. Sure there are stranger and dorkier things then us, but the public don’t know that.

Honestly if Society was open about lots of people who are different, the show wouldn’t even matter no matter what they try to accept.  I mean if the show tried, Society would act more better and respect pretty much any side of the Fandom just like they would on Humanity outside the Fandom.

But maybe if we try to keep making acceptance signs public, it could get accepted soon, its called standing up. Kinda like how people who were gay, they stand up, then later they got accepted. But I don’t know about this way, but anything is possible.

But eh, I worry this show is just going to act all bigoted against this one side of the Fandom, like promote fear of it. And the show will only try to accept some of it anyway I think.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about the media and While I personally have nothing against it, it does tend to bring out the worst in the fandom… Largely due to the individuals cast for the show. I feel that since three is likely no way of stopping MTV from trying to spin something negative (as is all too common), the best we could hope for is give any individuals who HAVE been cast pointers on how to act appropriately. If their going to e representing the fandom, they need to do it in a manner which is well i prepared for.

  6. I talked to them before. What pissed me off is that they had no interest in what I was into doing. Art, videos, interviews. Their only interest was finding people who are ashamed or secretive about their furryness. That their family and friends don’t know for instance and are essentially looking for real life drama to unfold when they reveal, come out, as their true selves. That’s all and good but you’re telling me they can’t make a interesting show around people who are not in that situation, who have lives and just happen to have these strange quirks about themselves the majority of people do not. You’re telling me that in itself is not interesting to people? I mean a guy thinking he has a spirit guide or is part animal is weird but at least it’s more interesting and cool then some who thinks he has a spirit guide in the form of an invisible man and a dead carpenter that likely never even existed and it doesn’t involve bashing gays or other people who are different.

The way your rambling comment veered off into inexplicable bashing towards the end suggests to me that you needed a hug. I hope you’re feeling better by now.

Welp, ”true life” isn’t the worst show ever, but I don’t think it’ll work.
    Lots of drama incoming though.

  8. I’ve lived in a few furry households and other than pasty faced 30 somethings staring into computer screens 14 hours a day with the occasional unfunf from a room off the hall, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Putting together some glitzy forever partying and happy fantasy furry thing is not an accurate portrayal of reality. Sure there are those with the means to spend thousands on fursuits and accessories, but the majority of furs slaving at wally world or Sonic in some backwards town in the Midwest does not resonate with this. You also have to keep in mind that most furries are introverted and lack social skills. All I’m saying is keep it real, or don’t bother. I’m worried that Furry will go “mainstream” then it’s all over. It’s bad enough with the fake furs and wannabe fanboys clinging onto us. Don’t invite more of that with false portrayals.  Adminission over.

I don’t know how any furry could fall for such obvious lies.
